S.Korean Medical team served over 600 patience in 3 days in Athens, Greece

Approximately 50 to 60 years ago, our country (South Korea) was very poor;
many countries helped us so much, especially in terms of medical and educational aid.
Now that we are living better than in the past,
so we think it is our turn to help other people in difficulties!

Mr Sung Sunwoo, leader of the South Korean Asan Medical Team.

Who?
Since 2006, the Asan Medical Center Team has been carrying out humanitarian projects, mostly in Southern Asia.
The choice of Greece as a recipient for assistance for the first time
was in 2016.
From the 30th of July until the 1st of August 2018,
the Asan Medical Center choose Greece for a second time,
offering the gift of medical care to impoverished Greek people in need,
together with refugee groups living in the center of Athens.

Where?
The medical project was hosted in Athens by the Christian Humanitarian Organization
"Hellenic Ministries".
Every month in this same center, H.M. and the partner organization
"Refuge of Love and Compassion",
serving more than 3.800 meals, offering free showers, laundries,
cloth destributions and dental service.

How?
27 doctors, 12 nurses and 31 volunteers, together with 20 local volunteer-translators
(from Greek, Farsi, Arabic into English and back again!),
served for three full days.
The list of medical specialties who participated was impressive:

1 pulmonologist,
1 gastroenterologist,
1 ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) specialist,
1 radiologist,
1 onco-radiologist,
1 family physician,
2 surgeons,
4 generalists,
1 clinical laboratory specialist and
2 radiologists.

Participants?
Medical assistance was given to approximately 360 refugee and 250 Greek-speaking patients.
Some of whom were examined by more than one department and
some of them received for the first time over a long period of time medical services.
The first group examined, of refugees, have arrived in Greece
from various Middle East and African countries.
The group of the Greek-speaking participants,
included a number of former economic immigrants who arrived in Greece
from the Balkans after 1990.
Among the participants, was a rising number of migrating (and currently homeless)
European citizens (Italy, Germany, Austria).
These two groups could not afford medical examinations and treatment,
because of the difficult economic condition in Greece.

So what now?
When asked for an opinion about the main need of patients seen
by the Asan Medical Center team, Sung Sunwoo replied:
Both refugees and Greek speaking audience need their own family doctors,
who can manage their chronic diseases, treat acute episodes,
give emotional support, treat chronic pain and skin problems.
